Locative (-de)

The Locative case (Bulunma Hali) indicates the location where something is or where an action takes place. It generally translates to "in," "on," or "at."

Suffixes:

The locative suffix follows A-Type vowel harmony and consonant assimilation (hardening):

  • After vowels and voiced consonants: -da (if last vowel is a, ı, o, u) or -de (if last vowel is e, i, ö, ü).
  • After voiceless consonants (f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p - "FıSTıKÇı ŞaHaP"): -ta (if last vowel is a, ı, o, u) or -te (if last vowel is e, i, ö, ü).

Examples:

  • Evdeyim. (I am at home.) (ev + -de)
  • Kitap masada. (The book is on the table.) (masa + -da)
  • Okulda öğrenciler var. (There are students at school.) (okul + -da)
  • Sokakta yürüyor. (He/She is walking in the street.) (sokak + -ta, k is voiceless)
  • Kitapta ilginç bilgiler var. (There is interesting information in the book.) (kitap + -ta, p is voiceless)
  • Bahçede çiçekler var. (There are flowers in the garden.) (bahçe + -de)
  • İşteyim. (I am at work.) (iş + -te, ş is voiceless)
