Types of Adverbs

Adverbs (zarflar) are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They provide information about how, when, where, why, or to what extent an action is performed.

Common Types of Adverbs:

  • Adverbs of Manner (Durum Zarfları): Describe how an action is done.
Examples: hızlı (fast), yavaşça (slowly), iyi (well), kötü (badly), güzelce (nicely)
  • Adverbs of Time (Zaman Zarfları): Indicate when an action occurs.
Examples: şimdi (now), yarın (tomorrow), dün (yesterday), sonra (later), önce (before), bugün (today), her zaman (always), asla (never)
  • Adverbs of Place (Yer-Yön Zarfları): Specify where an action happens or direction.
Examples: burada (here), orada (there), içeri (inside), dışarı (outside), yukarı (up), aşağı (down), ileri (forward), geri (back)
  • Adverbs of Quantity/Degree (Miktar/Derece Zarfları): Indicate how much or to what extent.
Examples: çok (very, much), az (little, few), biraz (a little), pek (very), daha (more), en (most)
  • Interrogative Adverbs (Soru Zarfları): Used to ask questions about manner, time, place, etc. (See next section).

Many adverbs in Turkish are identical to adjectives (e.g., hızlı can mean "fast" as an adjective or "quickly" as an adverb). Context usually makes the meaning clear.
