Demonstrative Adjectives

Demonstrative adjectives (işaret sıfatları) are used to point out specific nouns. They are the same words as demonstrative pronouns: bu (this), şu (that - often nearby or being indicated), and o (that - further away).

Usage:

When used as adjectives, these words come before the noun they modify.

Crucially, unlike when they function as pronouns, demonstrative adjectives do not take plural or case suffixes. The noun itself can be plural or take case suffixes, but the demonstrative adjective remains unchanged.

  • Bu kitap ilginç. (This book is interesting.)
  • Şu arabalar yeni. (Those cars are new.) - "arabalar" is plural, "şu" is singular.
  • O adamı tanıyor musun? (Do you know that man?) - "adamı" is accusative, "o" is unchanged.
  • Bu evler büyük. (These houses are big.)

Compare with pronoun usage:

  • Adjective: Bu elma kırmızı. (This apple is red.)
  • Pronoun: Bu kırmızı. (This (one) is red.)
  • Adjective: O çocuklar oynuyor. (Those children are playing.)
  • Pronoun: Onlar oynuyor. (They are playing. / Those (ones) are playing.)

Practice Zone

1. In 'Bu kitaplar' (These books), does 'bu' (this/these) change for plural?

2. In 'O evler' (Those houses), which word indicates that 'evler' is 'those'?
